Laser Formation of Disks Using a Beamsplitter
The outside diameter and a centerhole of a concentric disk of a material can
be cut simultaneously using a single laser beam split by a beam-splitter.
A stationary laser device emits a laser beam 1 that is directed through the
center of a rotating spindle 2. Attached to the spindle 2 is an arm 3 on which a
beamsplitter 4 and two optical assemblies 5 and 6 are mounted. The entire
assembly is positioned above a stationary web of material 7 that can be
supported on a conveyor table (not shown), for instance.
In operation, the laser beam 1 is split by the beamsplitter 4. The larger
percentage of the beam is directed horizontally by the beamsplitter 4 and
reflected by mirror 8 into optical assembly 6 for cutting the larger diameter out of
the web of material 7. Focal lens 9 of optical assembly 6 focuses the laser beam
onto the web. A smaller percentage of the total beam energy is transmitted
through the beamsplitter 4 and is focused by lens 10 onto the web to cut out the
center hole in the disk. The lens 10 can be suitably positioned to appropriately
bend the laser beam to form the center hole cut out diameter, as required.
Generally the lens 10 is of a larger diameter than that required for lens 9.
The optical systems 5 and 6 are rotated together with the rotating spindle to
simultaneously cut the disk itself and the center hole in the disk in one revolution.
