When driving paper sheets by the operation of a feed nip formed by a driven roller and an idling backup roller, it is often desirable also to align a side edge of the sheet against a stationary metal surface extending in the direction of sheet feed. The disclosed means of mounting the backup roller (BUR) provides a variable side-aligning force on the sheet.
