Data supplied to recording device 1 via input line 2 is properly recorded on magnetic stripe card 3 by magnetic head 4 regardless of whether card 3 is passed from right-to-left or from left-to-right. The direction of card entry is determined by one of two photocells 5 and 6 located at either end of card slot 7 to properly orient the data to be recorded and to select the downstream one of two read heads 8 and 9 to read the data after recording for checking purposes. If preferred, as an alternative to the above, a single checking read head can be employed in the central position 4 with selection by photocell 5 or 6 of one of the two upstream write heads at positions 8 and 9.
