A one-line matrix display comprises a segmented conducting ring allowing one sliding contact to commutate, in serial fashion, with one light emitting element for each column within a character box. The number of conducting rings is thus reduced to one per character box and only one electrical drive circuit is provided per character thereby reducing the cost of the display.
