Rotating Multi Station Display
A rotating multi-station display utilizes a small number of light emitting diode
elements to provide partial lying character displays at plural keyboard stations.
Fig. 1 depicts the display concept. Drum 1 revolves about the axis of
symmetry 2. Light-emitting elements 3 attached to the surface of drum 1 follow
paths 4 as the drum revolves and pass over virtual matrix positions 5. Each time
the light-emitting elements travel the distance 6, selected elements are switched
on by the control electronics for a time which is short compared to the transit time
to travel between adjacent virtual matrix positions. The RPM of the drum is set
so that the flashing sequence is repeated often enough to prevent flicker.
Fig. 2 illustrates the manner in which the light-emitting elements are
electrically commutated. One terminal of each light-emitting device is connected
to a common conducting ring 7. The other terminal of each element is connected
to a separate conducting ring 7a, there being one such ring for each element.
Stationary contacts 8 pass the electrical pulses from the voltage source 9
through the control electronics 10 to ground. The control electronics contain
electrically controlled switches in series with each light-emitting element which
gate the current flows according to the information to be displayed. The electrical
crossovers 11 are made through a subsurface route.
