This system provides a fixed length record structure for logging, into a common data set, inherently variable length transactions from point-of sale terminals onto either an IBM-type 1 diskette with 128-byte format or an IBM-type 2D diskette with 256-byte format. The records do not reflect the diskette-type differences to a Host processing program and are identified by terminal so that the processing program can reassemble the transactions by terminal. Transactions that cross diskette boundaries can be reconciled by the processing program independent of the order in which the diskettes are read into the processing Host. In addition, the logging scheme makes optimum use of available diskette space and requires only two 128-byte buffers in each point-of-sale terminal.
