Magnetic recording heads for use with high track density single flexible record disks require very exact alignment to obtain the required flying performance. Where a flexible disk is flown over a stabilizing Bernoulli backing plate, the disk position is determined by the hydrodynamic relationship between the rotating disk and the plate. If a recording head projects through a slot in the backing plate to access the surface of the disk facing the plate, then the head to disk separation is influenced by a combination of parameters all of which must be controlled if optimum performance is to be obtained.
