Recently, much research has centered on the chemical or physical modification of electrode surfaces in order to generate electrodes which are capable of selective interactions with solute redox systems. This work has been motivated by the potential applications of such systems in electrochemical catalysis, selective electrochemical synthesis, electrochemical analysis, passivation of metal surfaces subject to corrosion, and photoelectrochemical energy conversion.
