The concept of prestaging a cache line, before it is required, allows the miss process to be overlapped with productive processing. Since data is addressed using a base register and a displacement, the change of a base register could be used to signal a prefetch. The question is: how is it known that this register will be so used. Since instructions are reused multiple times, information about the instructions, use of base registers and their displacements can be resorted to, to determine the intent of use of a register currently being loaded.
