A method is described for notifying sessions whose explicit routes have failed without requiring that the defined explicit routes be bidirectional. In other words, it is assumed that a session uses two non-bidirectional paths to communicate with each other; a session end A uses a path P(AB) to send its messages to another session end B, (and B uses a path P(BA) to) sent its messages to A where P(AB and P(BA are not necessarily physically reversible (i.e., P(AB is not necessarily (the reverse of P(BA). Since a session is duplex, the failure of P(AB) or P(BA) should be notified to both A and B.
