Adjustment Mechanism for a Torque Limiter
The torque limiter illustrated in the drawing has an adjustable characteristic
such that the slip torque may be adjusted to a desired slip value.
The driving hub 10, typically driven by a belt, is connected through a clutch
spring 12 which is attached to the driving hub 10. Clutch spring 12 is normally
wrapped down into interfering engagement with driven hub 14 attached to an
output shaft. Without any further parts, the limit on transmitted torque depends
upon the normal force exerted by the clutch spring 12 onto driven hub 14.
Inasmuch as this can vary, it is desirable to make the normal force and, hence,
the driving torque uniform from clutch to clutch or, at least, be adjustable with
respect to any one clutch.
This can be accomplished by the addition of a torque ring 16 in the shape of
a C, partially surrounding driving hub 10 and having an ear 18 which engages the
tang 20 of torque spring 12. As such, the torque ring 16 will act to tighten the
spring 12, thus increasing the normal force and the slipping torque.
In order to insure that torque ring 16 remains tightened, a spring 22 is
engaged between one end of torque ring 16 and a ground 24 on driven hub 10.
To adjust the slipping torque of the torque limiter, the spring 22 may be threaded
through a hole in the end of torque ring 16 and then may be rotated to effectively
thread it along the helical form, thereby effectively shortening the spring length of
spring 22. Th...
