Magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) is a ferrimagnetic material wherein iron atoms at certain lattice positions have colinear magnetic spins while those at a second type of position have the spins aligned opposite to those of the first. The net magnetic moment is derived from there being more atoms in one type of lattice position (octahedral) than in the other (tetrahedral).
