The transmission of threechannel EKG (electrocardiogram) signals in real time over a switched telephone network using an FDM/FM (frequency division multiplex/frequency modulation) approach is routinely achieved using inexpensive hardware. A major disadvantage of analog transmission is the cumbersome quality checking at the receiving end. Manual over reading or imprecise "transmission artifact" routines are used to attempt to detect the more gross problems.
