Described and illustrated is a technique for joining dissimilar metals as
implemented in constructing a high speed print hammer.
A common solenoid is a pivoted armature of suitable magnetic properties, for
example, silicon iron or mild steel, with an attached lever to multiply the stroke.
Typically, silicon iron laminates are used for the armature and a high strength
steel is used for the lever, with the parts welded together. Rivets and adhesives
do not fasten the parts as reliably as welding. Boron-aluminum composite has
been found to be a more desirable lever material than steel because it has the
strength and stiffness of steel and the mass density of aluminum.
A thin boron aluminum lever 1 is sandwiched between silicon iron laminates 2
and a weld is made across the assembly. The molten iron 3 "puddles" across
the aluminum during welding and solidifies into an iron bridge across, capturing
the aluminum. The result is a structure with the aforementioned advantages.
