Shown and described is a combination ribbon drive mechanism for a printer which accommodates three types of ribbon cartridges. Three types of ribbons are frequently used on word processing equipment: Tech III, fabric, and correcting film. Because of the different physical characteristics of the three ribbons, three different handling means must be employed. On certain equipment all three, or at least two, of these ribbons may be used. In the known art the interchanging of different ribbons is accomplished by two methods. One method is to make ribbon handling means integral with the cartridge, leading to high supply cost; the second is to make ribbon handling means for one or, at most, two types integral with the equipment.
