System For Selecting Velocity in Multi-Velocity On-The-Fly Impact Printer

The present system relates to a daisy wheel on-the-fly printer. More specifically, it relates to the synchronization of the movable print wheel which rotates for a variable distance with the carriage moving at a variable velocity so that the moving carriage reaches the preselected print position coincident with the print wheel's arrival at the print character selected for said position. With such impact printers, a system has to be provided to select one of a variety of velocities for the escapement which moves the carriage so as to achieve the next print position in the minimum amount of time, whereby on-the-fly printing may take place in synchronization with the next selected character on the print wheel. It has been recognized that the use of a variable velocity escapement will achieve such a result.
