In printer systems for controlling the operation of impact printers utilizing different fonts, a problem is presented of converting from a large capacity code representative of all the characters in all the fonts to a limited capacity code representative of the particular font in use. The conventional method is to separate the character codes into two varieties: the invariant codes that appear on all of the print heads of print elements, e.g., print wheels, and the variant codes that vary from print wheel to print wheel, e.g., symbols or non-English characters. Conventionally, for a particular print head or wheel, a table is constructed for converting the large capacity stored code into the specific code by combining the invariant code conversion and the specific variant code conversion for the selected print wheel.
