Abstract

The present structure provides an impact printer hammer missile structure which has safeguards to prevent damage to the hammer assembly when the hammer misses a print wheel petal. Damage is prevented by an expedient for slowing the missile down after a print wheel petal is missed. A secondary mass is slidably mounted along the missile axis. The missile armature will hit and drive this second mass only when the armature moves forward past the normal stop point when a print wheel petal is absent. The secondary mass serves to retard, i.e., slow down, the armature so as to prevent missile damage.
