Drops 11 from ink jet head Z, that are not to be used in creating a character on the printing surface, are deflected by electrodes X and Y (charge electrodes not shown) to gutter 12, which may return the ink to a reservoir. In addition to this interception function during printing, the gutter tip serves as a static target for adjustment of the ink stream deflection to ensure accurate drop placement. The arrangement shown above allows the stream of drops and the gutter to be viewed and adjusted without removing any parts or affecting other adjustments.
