In the paper path of a copier machine, a gate is provided to intercept the leading edge of a sheet of copy paper and hold it in a stationary manner until the right moment in the sequence of machine operation. When released by the gate, the leading edge of the copy paper is moved to mate with the leading edge of an image to be reproduced on the paper.
