Shown above is a two-position ink stream catcher, or gutter tube, for an ink jet printer using a binary print scheme which prints with undeflected ink drops and deflects unwanted drops to the gutter. In normal operation, the gutter tube 10 is in the lower position. The ink stream, when not printing, is electrostatically deflected into the gutter. As drops are required for printing, they are left uncharged and fly over the top of the gutter to the paper (not shown).
