This article discloses an apparatus for determining whether or not small delicate parts are properly positioned in a selected nest. The apparatus does not require mechanical contact between the part in the nest 12 and the sensor. This sensor system is particularly valuable in determining whether or not small semiconductor chips are precisely located in testing or assembly tools. The drawing shows a chip 10 carrying pads 11 located in a cavity 13. The cavity 13 is designed so that pads of the chip 10 will fit within the cavity when all the pads are correctly oriented on the chip. When the chip 10 is so oriented and the pads are so correctly aligned, the chip forms a good seal with the surface lip of the cavity 13.
