Magnetoresistive read heads 1 and 2 traverse a relatively narrow portion of magnetic record stripe 3 on a carrier, such as a plastic card 4, and thus are subject to interference from localized defects in magnetic stripe 3. Inconvenience caused by such defects is minimized by the provision of a second magnetoresistive head 2 that is spaced laterally from head 1 to engage a track on stripe 3 different from that engaged by head 1.
