Silicon Chip Grasp and Twist Device
It is necessary under certain manufacturing operations to grasp a silicon chip
in a package and apply a torque load to the chip. The grip loading must be
carefully controlled to avoid damage.
Fig. 1 shows a cross-sectional view taken through the body of the device.
The body 2 has a shank portion 1 which can be engaged in a rotary chuck (not
shown) for applying torsion to a chip that may be gripped between the several
fingers 3. There are four of the fingers 3 for gripping the four sides of a typical
silicon chip 4, as shown in Fig. 1. Fingers 3 are expanded by pressurizing cavity
5 with air applied through an aperture nozzle 6 to the back side of diaphragm 7
which impinges against a shoulder 8 to force the back surfaces of fingers 3 to
flex at the flexure point 9, as will appear later. A retaining ring 10 grips the base
11 of each of the separate fingers 3 to hold it and the diaphragm 7 tightly against
Fig. 2 shows an operative end view looking into the device of Fig. 1 from the
bottom. The retaining ring 10 can be affixed with screws 12, not shown in the
other figures. The fingers 3 are shown in Fig. 2 in the retracted or closed

expanded by application of air pressure through aperture 6 to cavity 5. Fingers 3
are rotated at the flexure points 9 to bend and expand the opening at the tips of
fingers 3, as shown in Fig. 3.
