A magnetic recording disk is coated with two separate coatings, one coating containing added alumina particles for durability in the start stop zones C and D, and the other coating containing no added alumina particles for the recording zones A and B. The start/stop zones can be made to any desirable width and located on any radius. The recording zones coated with the coating containing no alumina particles occupy all of the remaining surface.
