Alpha particles pose a serious problem in both one-device cells and CCD (charge-coupled device) memories. The severity of the problem is due to the charge stored in silicon having reversed biased junctions. These junctions sweep in the electron/holes generated by alpha particle penetration into silicon. The net result is that stored charge is changed so that the stored data in the device is altered.
