Staged Air Cylinder Dashpot
Variable damping rate in a piston-type dashpot is obtained by an
arrangement of air transfer ports which are effective as a function of the piston
Dashpot housing 10 contains piston rod 11 with head 12 having conventional
edge sealing relative to the interior walls of housing 10. A central bore 15
extending from face 14 coaxially into rod 11 communicates with lateral bore 16,
displaced from head 12. The damping rate as piston 11 is moved outwardly from
housing 10 increases as bore 16 enters the piston rod guide collar 18. The result
is a low damping rate for quick movement of rod 11 initially, followed by a much
higher damping rate to reduce the velocity of rod 11 before it contacts the end
face 20 of housing 10. To insure isolation of the interior chambers of housing 10,
guide collar 18 is of adequate length to close all bore 16 when piston head 12 is
against stop face 20. No air filter is required since no air is circulated outside of
the interior of housing 10.
The rod 11 may contain additional bores for increased versatility. For
instance, a plurality of lateral bores, like 16, with somewhat restricted flow can be
arranged along rod 11 in communication with one or more axial bores, such as
15, to allow smaller steps of damping rate change as piston 11 moves. In
addition, rod 11 can be extended through end wall 21 of housing 10 with an
additional lateral bore or bores like 16 within chamber area 22 and a guide collar
