The drawing shows the operation of a probe element 2 in three successive stages of probing a target 3. In stage I the probe is spaced above the target; in stage II it has just made contact with the target; and in stage III the probe has been moved a fixed additional distance toward the target to establish a selected force between the target and the probe. This operation is monitored by operating personnel who view the operation along the sight path shown in the side view of the drawing. Other components of the apparatus aid the operator in making the precise movement between stage II and stage III.
