Abstract

A programmable logic array (PLA) is a generalized array of OR and AND gates that are selectively interconnected (personalized) during manufacturing to provide a specific logic function. A PLA can be personalized by using a laser to delete unwanted connections in the array. This technique for personalization permits specific logic functions to be implemented quickly, and it is particularly useful for making prototype logic devices because engineering changes can be made quickly and easily. The module structure that is shown in the drawing further enhances this capability.
