Data-processing system 10 has a central shared data memory 11 cyclically accessible by multiple microprocessors 12, 13, 19 each having its own microcode in read-only storage (ROS) modules. Language processor 12 interprets high-level programs stored in data memory 11. Keyboard/CRT-display processor 13 uses an adapter 14 to connect a keyboard 15. Adapter 14 also controls a separately addressed I/O memory 16, normally used as a data buffer for hard-wired adapter 17 for CRT display 18. Other processors, such as 14, are microcoded for specific dedicated tasks and may interface through adapters 20 to devices 21, such as diskette drives, communications links, etc.
