The construction of the Leclanche dry cell consists of a zinc surface (cathode), a cellulose electrolyte spacer, a manganese dioxide-carbon black depolarization layer and a carbon rod (anode). These cells are limited to a low energy to volume ratio because of the small surface area available to the pressed carbon rod.
