A simple means of detecting when a motor shaft is rotating above or below a certain speed is to use the pulses from an encoder disc fitted to the motor drive shaft. By selecting the encoder disc pattern to give distinctive different pulse repetition rates for the two directions of rotation, the direction of rotation of the motor shaft can also be monitored.
