A method is provided in a computer system for programs invoked in a Call/Return stack to communicate with each other, with the requester of the job, and with the system instruction processor in an environment independent manner. The programs in the stack are able to monitor for messages sent to them by lower level program invocations. The monitoring program can receive the message and handle the condition it describes. Alternatively, it can reinterpret the message at a higher level of functional abstraction for its caller or the requester of the job. A trace of conditions detected and handled by lower level program invocations is also provided.
