In computer-base data communication systems using Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC) it is necessary to maintain the data link, when no data transmission takes place, by passing control information back and forth between the primary and secondary stations giving either the opportunity to transmit data. These control transmissions are designated Receive Ready supervisory frames. If the central processing unit (CPU) of the computer-based communication system is required to perform the data link control, an undue number of CPU cycles, storage cycles and storage locations would be consumed for this function. Also, there would be an increase in contention among various I/O devices attached to the computer system in addition to the communication link.
