In the transfer and storage of serial binary data, specially encoded marks or characters are sometimes employed to designate a specific point or area in the serial stream of data. Fig. 1 shows a stream of binary data where a special mark has been encoded to identify a special point. The special mark 10 consists of 14 bit positions. A 4-bit bytes 11 having a "1000" pattern are recorded ahead of the special mark.
