A bubble domain shift register is made by electron beam annealing of patterns of parallel rows of dark areas which are heavily annealed and which have the capacity to nucleate stripe domains in a perpendicular magnetic field and parallel columns of light areas crossing over the dark area rows which tend to inhibit nucleation in a perpendicular magnetic field. The film is patterned into a strip line by conventional photolithographic techniques.
