The circuit functions as a conventional current switch while also driving
push-pull complementary NPN-PNP emitter followers.
The design enables this circuit to both source and sink current through active
devices, and, therefore, drive highly capacitive loads. In the quiescent state, the
circuit consumes minimal power.
Emitter followers T6 and T9 are non-isolated vertical PNP transistors with
collectors common to the substrate. The emitter followers are driven through T4,
T7 and level translation diodes D1 and D2. The diodes may be of the diffused or
Schottky barrier type.
The level translation provided by T4 and D1 is such that output devices T5
and T6 are never simultaneously conducting. Output devices T7, D2 and T8, T9
are similarly configured.
