Uniform Detection of Electrostatic Discharge Energy Using a Transient
A reliable arrangement is provided for uniformly sensing ESD electrostatic
discharge) energy injected at any point in a processor complex.
A plate 10 made of an electrically conductive material is located on the floor
under one of the system frames 12, preferably a central location of the complex.
The plate 10 is connected to the frame 12 via a low impedance RF (radio
frequency) braided strap 14. A ferrite core 16 is clamped around the strap 14 and
senses the current induced as a result of an ESD to any location on the system
covers. The capacitance formed between the floor and the metal plate 10 is an
excellent focus point for the ESD energy to "sink" to.
The output of the core 16 contains frequency components over a broad
spectrum. The resultant complex waveform is passed through a serial resonant
circuit. Since the high frequency energy is filtered out, The output of the
resonant circuit remains fairly constant irrespective of the point of injection of the
ESD, as long as the ESD voltage is the same.
A ferrite core clamped around existing system power/signal cables and used
in conjunction with a serial resonant circuit was an extremely unsatisfactory
method of ESD detection for large systems. Poor signal/ noise ratio was obtained
and a large variation was obtained in sense levels when discharging at the CPU
