Providing I/O device power control, a common interface is used for powering up or down individual I/O devices while minimizing the number of interface lines and cables. The powering up and down of the I/O devices takes place under program control. The salient purpose of power control is to provide concurrent maintenance capability through a system control adapter described in U. S. Patent 4,023,142. Advantage is taken of the interface which already exists between the system control adapter and the I/O adapters. The added lines are: Device Power-On, Device Power-Off, Device Fault, Device Complete, and Gate Diagnostic Device Address.
