This invention relates to a method for reducing the number of acknowledgment interlocks between a pair of nodes communicating formatted messages over a demand/response interface. The method steps include: (1) embedding a random number in each message, (2) forming a running check sum at each node by exclusive ORing each random number as it is either sent or received in the sum vector, and (3) comparing the check sum at predetermined times between the nodes, inequality being indicative of error.
