The performance of a tape library system, which is an integral portion of a mass storage system, is enhanced by giving priority to input preload (IPL) for a tape unit over and above a second priority of output post load (OPL). Accordingly, when a mass storage controller (not shown) sets up a queue of moves for the conveyor, a first choice is to fetch a tape reel cartridge from the storage wall and place it into IPL rather than selecting a tape reel cartridge from OPL for storage into the storage wall. When there are multiple conveyors, the above procedure adds to total performance by reducing conveyor contention.
