Capacitively Coupled Push Pull Video Amplifier
A capacitively coupled push-pull video amplifier which provides a large
voltage swing (40 - 100 volts) into the predominantly capacitive load (10 pF) of a
cathode ray tube cathode is shown in the figure.
An input signal applied to input terminal 1 operates a low output impedance
pre-driver circuit 2. This circuit consists of two transistors Q1 and Q2 connected
as a complementary emitter follower stage and is coupled through capacitors C
to the emitters of output transistors Q3 and Q4. These transistors are connected
in common base mode to output terminal 3, with NPN transistor Q4 functioning to
drive the output negative and the PNP transistor Q3 to drive it positive.
The circuit injects a charge proportionate to the input voltage swing into the
output node. The input swing and the values of the capacitors C are calculated
to translate the output node voltage through the desired swing. Thus in a
practical arrangement, a well-defined 4 Vin of, say, 5 volts from the pre-driver
circuit 2 into 200 pF of capacitor C is translated into an output voltage Delta Vout
of 50 volts into the tube capacitance and circuit strait capacitance of 20 pF.
During the transition which turns on the opposite polarity output transistor Q3 or
Q4, the associated coupling capacitor C recovers its charge via diode D1 or D2.
