In the IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin 22, 3907-3908 (February 1980), a reluctance sensor is described which is utilized for gear tooth sensing. One of the advantages of this referenced reluctance sensor is that the sensor magnet can be positioned very close to the gear tooth to reduce the length flux path so as to obtain higher signal levels and/or permit the use of weaker magnets.
