A distributed data processing system is described wherein the design of application programs using the system is separated from and independent of the design and management of the physical processor arrangement. One application with "N" processes can utilize 'M" of "K" processors. System messages are transferred between "processes", as opposed to "processors". An advantage of the system is that it does not require any central logical control.
