Laser Beam Manipulating Device
A laser-beam manipulating device employing a single mirror lens optical
system allows a laser beam to trace any shape or size of path within the limits of
Manipulating device 1 comprises a single mirror 2 mounted on a gimbal 3 in
the form of a spherical bearing that permits universal movement. Mirror 2 is
tiltable to any desired X-Y position by two gimbal pivots 4, 5 disposed at right
angles to each other. Focusing motor 6 secured to tubular housing 7, acts
through screw 8 and telescoping sleeve 7a to raise and lower lens 9, as
necessary, to maintain beam 10 of laser 11 in focus with the lens to perform a
desired work operation on workpiece 12.
For each X-Y resultant angle of gimbal 3 (calculated from the position of the
X and Y gimbal pivot driving means, not shown) a corresponding lens position is
determined. By use of a microprocessor or numerical control machine (not
shown), any desired path may thus be traced on workpiece 12 by beam 10.
Once the desired path is determined, beam 10 is kept in focus by lens focusing
motor 6, which is also under control of the microprocessor or numerical control

X crossfeed from 0, and Y is the displacement of the Y crossfeed from 0.
