Data for a raster display can be stored in a continuously running sequential access buffer (e.g., charge-coupled device or rotating magnetic disk) in such a manner that no storage space is wasted to allow for the horizontal and vertical retrace times required by the raster display. The buffer rate is constant during sweep as well as during retrace, permitting direct connection of the buffer to the display without the need for any speed matching interface.
