Task timing apparatus is provided to time tasks and other events in a computer system. Two timing mechanisms are used for satisfying all of the timing requirements of the computer system. One timing mechanism is used for timing the active task and causing the execution of that task to be interrupted whenever a prespecified time interval has elapsed. The other timing mechanism functions to time events which are external to the active task. Additional interval timers can be used to time multiple external events.
