Abstract

The IBM 5255 Ideographic Display Station connected to a host system via a channel and work station controller (WSC) (Fig.1) displays both alphanumeric and ideographic, i.e., Japanese or Chinese, characters on the same screen. Alphanumeric characters are selected by the standard one-byte EBCDIC code and occupy one character position on the screen. Ideographic characters are selected by a special two-byte code and occupy two character positions on the screen.
