The presence of a clean copier photoconductor is determined on copy run initiation by counting and interpreting emitter pulses. With an an appropriate count, the control logic assumes the previous stopping condition was normal and ended with a cleaning cycle. Conversely, the control logic responds to other than normal pulse counting by performing a cleaning sequence after the first copy run.
