Collator Programmable for Mix of Collate and Noncollate Distribution
Copy sheets are sequentially distributed to collator bins until a selected bin is
reached, at which point the remainder of the copy run is delivered in its entirety to
the selected bin.
A collator is shown schematically as an array of receiving bins 10. Vane 12 is
movable to sequentially align with each of the bins 10 to normally distribute
sheets one at a time in sequence to each of the bins. Control logic 15 generates
an output signal on line 16 to energize solenoid 18 so that vane 12 is indexed
from one bin to the next. In normal operation, the escapement mechanism (not
shown) causes vane 12 to move downward, and the vane step switch 20 is
momentarily closed to indicate to control logic 15 over line 21 that the indexing
has been successfully completed.
A mix of collate and noncollate distribution is obtained by positioning switch
25 in association with one of the bins 10 and in the path of movement of vane 12.
Whenever vane 12 has indexed downward sufficiently so that it is in alignment
with the selected bin such as bin 28, switch 25 is actuated so that contact 30 is
positioned to couple output 16 directly to input 21. This transfer interrupts the
normal vane down escapement signal in that solenoid 18 is isolated and the
down steps are inhibited because of the absence of drive current to coil 18. The
